Feira da Azambuja, 23-27th of May

Each year in May bulls are released into the streets of Azambuja, a village 50 km from Lisbon. There’s also bullfighting in the arena (‘tourada’), just like in Spain, but the difference is that in Portugal the bull is not killed. Nevertheless, the bull gets challenged and bullied (the word ‘bullying’ is very appropriate here…), both in the streets and in the arena. Every year thousands of people come to Azambuja to experience the spectacle. And of course – this is Portugal after all –good food also plays a leading role. Everywhere hangs the smell of grilled sardines. Not to be missed!
